Top Outdoor Activities for your Memorial Day Weekend

We’re gearing up for another long holiday weekend and it’s the perfect time to take a day trip or weekend trip and explore the outdoors.  So, what’s there to do this Memorial Day weekend in Tennessee? We’ve got your top outdoor activities right here.

    1. White Water Rafting

With warmer temperatures spanning across the nation this weekend, it’s a perfect time to turn on your adventurous side and go white water rafting.  Raft Outdoor Adventures in Hartford, Tennessee is a hot spot for your weekend rafting adventures.  Sign up for a day full of fun on their guided river tours.  They’ll take you rafting down Big Pigeon River and right alongside the Great Smoky Mountains.  With rapids that travel through Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Sevierville you can choose the length and strength of your white water rafting trip.  The upper portion of Pigeon River has rougher rapids while the bottom portion of Pigeon River has softer rapids, better suited for the kiddos.  For more information on how and where to book your white water rafting trip, visit

    2. Shelby Farms Park

Similar in concept to New York’s Central Park, Shelby Farms is over 4500 acres of fun and activities for the whole family.  Located in the heart of Shelby County, TN and the only urban park in the area, visitors can spend the entire day enjoying the outdoors.  There are hiking and biking trails, including a 6.5 mile trail that connects midtown Memphis to the park.  Horse Trails for your four-legged friends to spend the day with you. There are even stables nearby where you can house your horse overnight.  You can also go fishing, boating and paddle boarding on the many lakes that are intertwined within Shelby Park.

Challenge your family and friends to a game of laser tag or paintball, or come watch the BMX daredevils practice their skills on the only BMX course in the city.  Kids can interact and expand their imaginations at the Woodland Discover Playground where all of the equipment on site help develop skills that are important for development. It’s the only park of its kind in the area.  To unwind at night, you can visit the park’s amphitheater and listen to live music or possibly take in a movie, depending on the park’s schedule.  No matter what your interests Shelby Farms Park has what you are looking for this Memorial Day weekend for fun in the sun.

    3. Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area

Here’s another great recreational area to spend the day outdoors.  Visitors can go whitewater paddling, horseback riding, and rock climbing and hiking. There are over 212 miles of trails within the recreation area that offer long and short trails depending on your desired distance.  Rock Climbing trails are all over within the sandstone bluffs, but you climb at your own risk, so make sure you are prepared for the challenge.

Whitewater paddling is available on the Clear Fork, Cumberland, North White Oak and New River. Rapids vary depending on the weather and river you choose to paddle down. Or, if you just want to take a leisurely float you can find the different routes at the parks visitors’ center.
