    Fun Facts

We thought we would spend some time on this blog telling you some little known RV facts that maybe you didn't know about. These facts all maybe relatively unknown, but they have a significant impact on the RV industry in some way or another. So here are some facts and why you should care about them.

    Enjoy!

    1. You don't need a Large SUV or Truck to Tow an RV

Some people think that to tow an RV you need a large luxury sedan or a truck, and this simply isn't true. Even compact cars can tow some small pop up campers believe it or not! If you have a V6 engine on your small SUV or compact, you usually have more towing capacity. An easy way to find out if your vehicle can tow an RV is to enter it into a towing calculator. A towing calculator will tell you exactly if your vehicle has enough towing capacity to handle your RV.

    2. RV Shipments are Increasing at an Alarming Rate

After the financial crisis of 2008, the RV industry took a real hit. In 2009, only 165,700 units were shipped to be sold, a huge decrease from previous years. But the economy slowly became better, and now the RV industry is returning to levels that have never been seen before. In 2014, 356,700 units were shipped and since 2012 shipments have increased by 40 percent.

What does this mean for you?

What this means is that as a consumer of RVs, you will not only be getting a quality RV, you will be getting a fair price because of the market. Now is a great time to buy and RV with the industry booming, and the best part is it doesn't look to be slowing down anytime soon.

    3. Did you Know 80% of all RVs are manufactured in Elkhardt County, Indiana?

You may be wondering why Elkhardt County? Why is that the RV Capital of the world. That is a great question and it is one that dates back to the 1930's. Elkhart County has many major highways and railroad transportation links that go through it. Its central location to large metropolitan markets along with the fabulous transportation services made it a natural fit for shipping goods. But how did the RV business begin to boom?

A man by the name of Wilbur Schult bought Elkhart’s Sportsman Trailer Company from Milo Miller in 1936. Now Shult was a great promoter and he was very influential in creating a trailer empire. This gave way to more manufactures coming aboard. With the easy access for shipments and the need for trailers on the rise after the war, Elkhardt was named the "Trailer Capital of the World."

Today you will find the following manufacturers located in Elkhardt County:

    • Dutchmen
    • Jayco
    • Grand Design
    • Newmar
    • Forest River
    • Gulf Stream
    • Heartland
    • Keystone
    • Thor
    • Winnebago

    4. RV Camping Clubs date back to the 1930's

Ever since RVs have been around, so have RV clubs! These clubs were established for various reasons back in the day, but now RV clubs and RV networks exist so that your RV experience can become the best it can be.
