My family's favorite camping area in east TN is the KOA Townsend, the quieter side of the Smokies. It sits next to the Little River and has campsites along the waters edge. When we get a chance to visit, it is usually summer time. We like to rent tubes for the day and shuttle teens up to the Smokey Mountain park entrance. Everyone has a grand time floating back down to the campsite. Watch out for that prankster with the fake snake though (attached to his fishing pole). He's usually set up near the rope swing.

This campground is near the Cades Cove, which has always provided nice scenery and wildlife. Abrams Falls hiking trail is a must (I would not recommend it during a thunderstorm, pretty scary stuff). At the end of the day, our family likes to make the short trek to the ice cream shop to enjoy a treat. Many fond family memories have been made at this campground.
